Gets the job done well...great product!Aug 19, 2009

Occaisionally Handstands sends me new products to try out. This happens to be one of the better products that I've seen from Handstands--the Laptop Cooler.
What comes with it:
*The Aluminum Stand with cooling fans
*Two cables--one 2.0 to 2.0 and one 2.0 to Mini-B - I loved that it came with both which really gave me some flexibility in using the ports.
*6 built-in USB ports
Pro's
1. MY LAPTOP DOESN'T GET SUPER HOT ANY MORE!!! The stand is not tall, but adequate enough to allow air to flow under the stand. The height actually still allows for comfortable typing--especially if you have a wrist pad or something of that sort--which I do as I also got a couple wrist mats and pads from Handstands a while back.
2. The fans do the job--taking air from under the laptop, through the fans, and out the back (which is slightly raised.)
3. Other people have complained about fans being loud on other models by other manufacturer's; however, this one was very quiet--at most there was a slight purr.
4. The extra USB ports. I don't have a ton of peripheral devices, but I do have a mouse, a keyboard, a camera, a web cam, a phone, external hard drive (ok, maybe I have more than just a few--but who doesn't), and this hub seemed to handle them all pretty good. I don't leave every one plugged in all the time, but when needed, the hub has done the job. Granted it isn't a powered HUB--which I recommend they come out with one that is powered--but being non-powered it handled the devices I had as well as I needed. I don't upload or download to my external hard drive very much, so someone that does a ton may have some issues if they don't have an adapter to add a little power to the stand--for me, no problems at all.
5. On/Off switch--I'm not quite sure if this is necessary, but if I had any device that I wanted to have a little more control over, it might come in handy--not so much as a Pro, just an add-on. It could be nice if you didn't want the fans running, but still wanted to use the fan, but then...just unplug the cable, or turn it off at the switch, your choice.
6. Aluminum - the stand is made of aluminum, which first of all is light and secondly naturally dissipates heat--not to mention it looks pretty nice too.
7. Price--this is very affordable and definitely worth the money they are selling it for. I do know that they also have some other stand and cooling options at various price points for those looking for something a little different--whether for the desk top, for the lap, or as a desk. This one is mid-range and in my opinion, well worth it.
Con's
1. Not really any con's on this product other than what was mentioned above that there is no power adapter included. It wasn't a problem for me, but would be a nice inclusion for those power users.
There's not much to get wrong with this product and Handstands seemed to nail it on this one. My laptop, a 15" Dell Latitude, fit nicely on the stand and could have probably held something even bigger. I really liked having all the cables from the ports being able to go under the stand and keep my desk free of cables and cords. For the price, I would definitely recommend this product!

Does it's job wellSep 16, 2009

This is undoubtedly a good laptop cooler. My processor temps went from hovering around 60 C when I was doing work to a max of 40. I have a few programs open right now and I'm at 38 C. A few things that I didn't like. I feel like the lip for this (the curved edge) should me on the other side. Also, it could stand to be just a smidge lower, but these are really just aesthetic things. It's a great product and I would recommend it to anyone.
Useful only as a stand, not a hubAug 16, 2010
By Rice Delman Received this item and immediately noticed that the power button does nothing. The fans are always running as long as it's plugged in, whether the switch is on or off. Kinda weird. Additionally, five of the six USB ports just don't work. Maybe mine is a rare dud, I don't know. I basically received an aluminum stand with a USB-switched fan, which is ok considering I only wanted a stand anyway.
It's a little flimsy as well, and the feet are clear plastic which takes away from what could've been a better-looking product (albeit much more expensive). I use it with a 15" Macbook Pro (Core i7) though and it does lift it off the table enough to make a difference in temp. While using XBMC as a test, the temp usually hovers around 170-175. Lifted with the stand it goes down to about 167, and with the fans turned on (which by the way are nearly completely silent, you have to cock your head to make sure they're on), the temp goes down into the high 140s, low 150s. Not bad. I really only use the fan occasionally, for cpu-intense applications that can overpower the MBP's built-in 5K rpm fans.
All in all, it's a bit of a lemon, but if you just want an aluminum stand for about $30 (what I paid, will probably go down though), this is it. The fan is more of a bonus than a feature.
Quite loud, don't buy if you like silenceMar 18, 2010
By stuffgeeekswant-dot-com It's nicely made and does its job, but I was expecting something a lot quieter. I don't know why since the MacBook Pro fans are so loud when on, but this really isn't that much quieter. It also uses 2 USB ports -- I know why and it's not a big deal, but thought I'd point that out.
Ultimately I returned mine because I prefer a quieter environment (I had bought it mostly for the passive cooling and USB ports).

Perfect in every way. Not powered, but gets its power from either the laptop or powered hub. Really satisfied with quality and features, and price!
